What is Pongal?
Pongal is an important festival in India, and we pray to the Sun God on this occasion.Celebrated mainly by Hindus from Southern India, Ponggal is a time of thanksgiving for a successful harvest. Hindus cook ponggal--a sweet preparation of rice--in new pots and allow it to boil over, symbolising prosperity. The sun is very powerful and helps in the growth of the paddy and other plantations. So this festival is very important for farmers and so it is celebrated in a grand manner in villages.
The house is cleaned, and all maintanance jobs are done before this festival. During the four day festival, different varieties of Rangoli are drawn in front of the houses early in the morning. Singapore's Hindu temples fill with worshippers who offer prayers to the gods together with rice, vegetables, sugar cane and spices, which are then eaten by devotees to cleanse themselves of their sins. Visitors are welcome to witness the festival. Temple etiquette requires visitors to be dressed appropriately and shoes to be removed at the entrance.

Other than knowing how other countries celebrate some festivities, it would be interesting to also taste ponggal. Looks like our "goto" or "lugaw" here in the Philippines.
